I am running behind with updating my blog with photos. I have some more photos from South America and a lot from Africa, where I was in february/march. So I decided to show you some photos from Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. I will be be posting more photos from my safari in the following days/weeks so be sure to come back.

The Serengeti is located in north Tanzania and extends to south-western Kenya and it spans some 30.000 km². The Serengeti hosts the largest mammal migration in the world, which is one of the ten natural travel wonders of the world.

Maasailand has East Africa’s finest game areas. The governments of Tanzania and Kenya maintain a number of Protected Areas: parks, conservation areas, game reserves, etc. that give legal protection to over 80% of the Serengeti.

Altitudes in the Serengeti range from 920 to 1,850 meters with mean temperatures varying from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. Although the climate is usually warm and dry, rainfall occurs in two rainy seasons: March to May, and a shorter season in October and November.

The Serengeti was used as inspiration for the animated Disney feature film The Lion King and subsequent theatrical production.

I have been to a few parks in Tanzania during my trip, but the Serengeti was the largest. Every park has its own advantages, animals, secrets…but more on others later on.

Going on a Safari was a dream for me for a long time. This dream finally came true this year.

I can’t describe how amazing it is to see wild animals in their natural habitat. I remember all of those amazing shows on National Geographic and other channels, but this was soooo much better. It was phenomenal!

Scenes from the following movie were shot in Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Manyara and Tarangire national parks in Tanzania.

I am back home from a Safari in Tanzania. It was a great experience and I would go back in a heartbeat. Currently I am fully occupied with my college so it may take a while for me to edit and post some more photos. I will do my best. In the meanwhile…

Peru, Bolivia and Chile

The llama (Lama glama) is a South American camelid, widely used as a pack and meat animal by Andean cultures since pre-hispanic times.

The llama and alpaca are only known in the domestic state, and are variable in size and of many colors, being often white, brown, or piebald. Some are grey or black. The guanaco and vicuña are wild, the former being endangered, and of a nearly uniform light-brown color, passing into white below. They certainly differ from each other, the vicuña being smaller, more slender in its proportions, and having a shorter head than the guanaco. The vicuña lives in herds on the bleak and elevated parts of the mountain range bordering the region of perpetual snow, amidst rocks and precipices, occurring in various suitable localities throughoutPeru, in the southern part of Ecuador, and as far south as the middle of Bolivia.

As the sun’s first rays slant into the depths of Colca Canyon in southern Peru, Andean condors begin to ascend, riding morning thermals on outstretched wings as they scour the landscape for a meal of carrion.

The species is listed by the World Conservation Union as “vulnerable.” One of the world’s largest flying birds, the condor soars on three-meter wingspans and can weigh up to 15 kilograms.

Today, one of the best places to see the Andean condor is the semi-arid Colca Canyon, a marvel twice as deep as the Grand Canyon located about 160 kilometers north of Arequipa, Peru’s second largest city.

Lovely squirrels on Fuerteventura

It is time for some pictures from Hawaii, this time from a Zoo in Honolulu on Oahu and Pana`ewa Rainforest Zoo on The Big Island.

Here is my first attempt to shot a short video with the new EOS 5D mkII. I have no idea around video and editing so this was just for fun and to see how useful is the new video mode. I think that with practice you could get some really nice things on “tape”. The movie is downsized, however you can see it in larger resolution on this link.

…or Siberian Tiger. I was in Ljubljana ZOO today to check them out. I also wanted to play around with the new video mode on 5D mkII. I must say that the ISO performance on the new 5D is just stunning! All the photos were shot at ISO1600.

The name should say it all. The beach is located on Phi Phi Don island. I stopped at Monkey Beach when I was traveling around the islands. You must watch out because the monkeys can bite you. After you have fed the monkeys with bananas don’t be surprised if they jump on you wanting more food, trust me I have seen it. They are also very intelligent, they will take stuff out of your backpack if you leave it lying on the beach.
